Mayor & Council

Committees & Commissions Delegate
Mayor Barb Gilliat
I was raised in Slave Lake and began my working life at various family-owned businesses. I eventually moved to Edmonton to work for Westcan Malting during the construction of what is now Rahr Malting. I moved to Alix in 1997 and continued to work with Rahr. In 2008 I purchased the Alix Hotel; which keeps me more than busy!
As a local business owner, I bring another point of view to Council. I am proud to represent Alix and feel our Village has so much potential. I am amazed at how many people visit to walk our amazing Nature Trail, and consider Alix to be a hidden gem in Central Alberta.
As part of Council, I represent Alix on 3 Library Boards, the Lacombe Solid Waste Commission, and the Lacombe Foundation, which is involved in senior and low-income housing. I also sit on the IDP Committee that negotiates policies between Alix and the County of Lacombe.

I am committed to promoting a team environment where people feel that their voices are heard, and we can collectively make the Village of Alix a great place to live, play, and do business. Please feel free to chat with me if you see me out and about!!!

Committees & Commissions Delegate
Councillor Ed Cole
I was born and raised in the national capital. After graduating from RMCP basic training in Regina, in 1981, I was given the choice of serving in Alberta or British Columbia. I chose Alberta, a decision I have never regretted.
I completed all my service in Alberta, serving at Swan Hills, Spruce Grove, Valleyview and Red Deer City, until I retired in 2001. Moving to Alix in 2011, I immediately felt very welcome, and part of the community. In 2017, I decided to return something to the community I felt was home, and stood for public office, as a Village Councillor. I was humbled and honoured to be re-elected in 2021 and again in 2025, and I look forward to working with the new Council team, to make Alix prosper.
I work as a Traffic Ticket Defence Agent, defending people on traffic and other provincial statues, in His Majesty's courts. Prior to the RCMP, I served in the Naval Reserve as a Signalman (Sea) from 1976 to 1980, and later as a CIC Officer (Sea) from 1999 to 2015. I have three grown children, who I am extremely proud of. I serve my fellow Alixians on the Municipal Planning Commission, Village/School Joint Use and Planning Agreement, Lacombe Regional Emergency Management Committee, and Bashaw RCMP Community Consultive Group.
I am also able to bring any concerns of the Village, to the Provincial Government, as a member of the executive of the Lacombe-Ponoka UCP Riding I have regular contact with our MLA Jennifer Johnson.

Committees and Commissions Delegate
Councillor Janice Besuijen
I was raised in Alix, moving away briefly in my teenage years. I have four children and one grandchild. Three of my children are still attending the Alix MAC School.
I worked in Red Deer at the Central Alberta Women's Emergency Shelter as a crisis worker and then as an Intensive Case Manager for almost seventeen years. That environment was rich in all manner of experiences. I transitioned into the roll of School Social Worker in 2016/2017. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the school division and working with the families in our community.
I am looking forward to the next four years and the learning opportunities, that this position will provide.
